Principe Leopoldo and Residence Lugano Switzerland
Via Montalbano 5, Lugano, Switzerland
Principe Leopoldo and Residence, perched atop the fabled "Golden Hill" which dominates the city of Lugano, is named after Prince Frederic Leopold, a distinguished cavalry general and member of the German Hohenzollern Dynasty.
Prince Frederic Leopold, son of the general who had built the villa as his summer residence, lived in it until his death in 1931, preferring its higher location, greenery and sweeping views, to the lakeside Villa Favorita. The Villa's architects, Clemens and Koenitz, opted for a two-floor structure.
Before becoming a hotel in 1986, the beautiful princely mansion bore witness to a hundred years of history, welcoming as residents or guests many of the notables of the European aristocracy of the times. The front of the hotel is dominated by an elegant portal between two, semi-circular verandas. On the opposite side, a wide terrace with 14 columns and large elliptical windows gives superb views of the amphitheatre-like lake and surrounding softly rounded mountains
